Instructional Design Course Analysis Playbook

The process of reviewing an online course for pre-launch readiness can vary according to the needs of the Academic Affairs department, the experience of the instructor, and the history of the course as it has evolved from term to term. The Course ID Analysis Playbook describes a set of guidelines for high-level analysis of an online course within the unique context of the course’s maturity and the level of experience of the instructor.

The project involved the following key challenges:

  • Produce a set of instructional design analysis guidelines that can be presented to an instructor as a blueprint for collaborative work rather than as a fault-finding checklist.
  • Distinguish the guidelines as differentiated from standard Quality Matters type analyses so that the instructor is provided with a basis for further conversation.

Results, impact, and lessons learned:

  • Instructors have responded positively to a combination of digestible insight into online pedagogy supported by scheduled work sessions with their instructional design partner.
  • Establishing a high level form of analysis enables the department manager to refer to different tiers of engagement with faculty as needs arise where the tasks and interaction are clearly defined.
  • Instructional designers are provided with an SOP for high level interaction with faculty so that methods of collaboration are consistent with all ID professionals in the department.
  • Lesson Learned: Producing a playbook for collaborative work with faculty is an evolving craft. Guidelines and best practice grow and expand over time, as must the Playbook itself.
